Jehovah's Witnesses to build church just off bypas

A local church, now in temporary quarters, will soon have a new home just off North Ellington Parkway.

Local developer Chuck Coble appeared before Lewisburg's Planning and Zoning Commission Tuesday, seeking approval for his plat to extend War Eagle Drive to a two-acre site, where he will sell the land to the Jehovah's Witnesses for a new church.

The congregation had a building on Nashville Highway, but it was sold, and they have been meeting in a room at a former convenience store just south of First Commerce Bank on Cornersville Road.

War Eagle Drive, where Fresenius Medical Care is located, is a dead-end street turning off North Ellington Parkway between First National Bank and Rock Crusher Road.

"The regulations require a 60-foot right of way," said city engineer Jim Patterson, looking at Coble's plat. "The existing one is 50 feet. If you wanted to leave it you would be justified in doing so."

Chairman Jim Bingham thought it would be better to adjust the right of way now.

"I'd rather do it now than later," he said. "There's plenty of room."

Planning commissioners voted unanimously to approve Coble's plat, subject to changing the right of way to 60 feet, and submitting a cost estimate to Public Works Director Kenny Ring. Coble will have to put up a bond for his work on War Eagle Drive, and also put up a bond for the small extension of water and sewer service.

Water and Wastewater Manager Kenneth Carr will give Coble an estimate of the amount required to extend these services.
